A
21ST CENTURY COLLABORATIVE EFFORT
Treating the causes and consequences of domestic
violence is a complex experience. Proper intervention
must involve physicians, nurses, psychiatrists,
psychologists, counselors, educators, service
providers, social workers, police officers, attorneys,
prosecutors, and judges. All of these professions must
respect each other’s skills and become more
understanding of each other’s limitations. It is our
belief that when the officers understand that the
arrest process is the first step and not the only step
concerning domestic violence intervention, they will
work harder to make domestic violence intervention a
reality. All agencies must share their
written policies, procedures, rules, regulations and protocols with
each other. All members of the community must reduce to writing their effort
in providing quantifiable assistance and support for victims and their children. Through
this sharing of information all members of the
community will come to understand the efforts of
others in the system and learn to appreciate the
difficulties each profession experiences.
