Public Transportation Safety Guidelines
  1. When riding a bus, use a stop that is well lit and near a coffee shop or store that is open.

  2. Travel with a friend or co-worker whenever possible.

  3. Know the bus or subway schedule ahead of time, so you are not forced to wait longer than necessary.

  4. Do not sleep on the bus or subway.

  5. Sit near the bus driver.

  6. Have your money or tokens in hand to give to the driver. This way you will not fumble with your wallet or purse.

  7. Do not engage in unnecessary conversation with strangers. Never give out any personal information. The person you are talking to may be fine, but others can overhear.

  8. Do not get too involved with reading while you wait. Stay alert!

  9. Move away from people who appear intoxicated, even if this means going to another stop.

  10. Do not share a cab with a stranger.

  11. Sit near the aisle so you can get up quickly if someone bothers you.

  12. Do not sit near the exit door on buses, trains, subways. At stops, when the door opens, someone can reach in and snatch your purse or briefcase.

  13. Hold on firmly to your purse or briefcase. Do not put it on the seat beside you. Keep it in your lap or wedge it between your feet.

  14. Tuck necklaces inside your clothing and turn rings around so that valuable stones are not showing. Better yet, remove jewelry before using public transportation.
