At the
Brockton Police Department we teach The
Crime Prevention Triangle.
This concept simply states that in order for a crime to occur all three of these triangles elements must exist:
Desire, Ability, & Opportunity
If we can eliminate any one of these elements a crime can not occur.
Let's take a
quick look at each of these elements. 1.
Desire
The desire of a criminal to commit a crime.
We as citizens can not effect or remove a criminals desire to commit a crime. If someone really wants to commit a crime they
will 2.
Ability
The Criminals ability to commit a crime.
We can not effect the ability of a criminal to commit a
crime. They will find a way. They can be thousands of miles away, use telephones, internet…
Could be even confined to a wheelchair & still commit crimes. 3.
Opportunity
The criminals opportunity to commit crimes.
This is where we can take action to prevent crime. By removing the opportunity for crime to occur we have broken the “Crime Prevention Triangle”. The
pages listed above in this section of our website outline steps we as citizens can take to remove this opportunity.
