THE
D.A.R.E. PROGRAM
The
D.A.R.E. program is a program that runs consecutively twice a year in each of the 22 elementary schools including the city's parochial schools. The program, this year, will reach out to over 1500 sixth graders. There are two full-time uniform patrol officers assigned to the D.A.R.E. program. The programs focuses on drug abuse prevention and education, building self-esteem, conflict resolution, stress management, and many other lessons. During the school year, the program runs a Skatetown night every month, with an average attendance of 300 students. There is also a graduation program in which the graduates receive D.A.R.E. T-shirts and certificates. Each year D.A.R.E. holds 8 graduations at the four junior high schools. The D.A.R.E. officers also assist in the coordinating of the mock trial program sponsored by the District Attorneys office. In the summer the D.A.R.E. officers assist in the District Attorney's office D.A.R.E. summer day program. The program also organizes various field trips. In October 1999, the Brockton D.A.R.E. program organized a trip to the Barnum & Bailey Circus Fleet Center. In conjunction with the GAAD, and help from the schools and parents, we brought over 1200 people into the Fleet Center. The program is financed by various grants and the fundraising efforts of the Brockton D.A.R.E. committee and the dedication and support from the community.
