Licensing Your Dog
When?
All dogs over 3 months of age must have a new license every year. The license must be purchased immediately after you acquire a dog. Every registered dog must at all times wear a valid license tag.
Where?
Brockton City Hall
City Clerk's Office 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
Monday thru Friday
License fees are:
$15.00 Not sprayed or not neutered
$6.00 Spayed or neutered
Why?
It is required by law.
The license on a dog's collar will identify the owner so that the dog can be returned home.
If the dog wearing a license is turned into the Brockton Animal Control the owner will be notified either in person or by phone, or certified mail.
Without a license, the impounded dog may be sold or destroyed after ten days.
Confining Your Dog
When?
At all times. All dogs must be physically confined or restrained on the owner, keeper, or harborer's property in the following ways:
A. Leash
B. Tether
C. Supervision of a person
D. Adequate fence
E. Secure enclosure
Such confinement must prevent escape.
Where?
Anywhere in the state.
Why?
To protect your dog.
To show your neighbors that you respect their privacy.
To comply with state law.
The penalty for failure to properly confine a dog that is not dangerous or vicious can be up to $175.00 in fines.
You are liable for any damage your dog may do to property, people, or livestock.
If your dog chases people, will bite people; contact us for more info about vicious or dangerous dog laws.
The Fines Are As Follows
Leash Law Violation $25.00
Failure To License $50.00
Violation While Unlicensed $50.00
No Rabies Vaccination $50.00
Pick Up Fee $25.00

Upon request of the new owner, the previous owner must give a written statement to the new owner which describes the dog's behavior and temperament.

Train your dog thoroughly
Confine him to outdoors alone only for brief periods, in such a
way that he cannot leave your yard.

Exercise and play with your dog

Keep him quiet

Give him proper shelter, food, and plenty of water.

Give him regular Veterinary care

Only these procedures will allow him the chance to really be your best friend.
Costs of Ownership
- Daily food (about ˝ - 1 cup per 10 lbs. wt)
- Yearly preventive vaccines (from your veterinarian)
- Dog license (yearly)
- Proper grooming equipment
- Training equipment (leash and collar)
- Confinement equipment (fence for yard, chain, long lines, properly fitting gates, cage, etc.)
- Boarding kennel fees
- Funding for emergency hospital care (**seldom needed for dogs who are properly confined)
- Don't forget toys and chew boned
*** Most of all… your daily sacrifice of time to play, exercise and obedience training
